I am interested in the globalisation process of Japanese creative industries (e.g. anime, manga, film, food, design, fashion). I am currently focusing on anime (Japanese animation) and conducting fieldwork in anime business’s overseas development. How can we understand the globalisation of anime? What does it mean for Japan, Asia, and the world at large? Who makes anime global and in what manner? With these anchoring questions in mind, I have been working on the following research projects:

Research on anime’s development in India

I conducted fieldwork on a venture business initiated by an entrepreneur who attempted to establish an online platform to distribute anime goods from Japan to India. I participated as an advisor to the start-up company that he founded for this project. Observing (and participating in) his everyday business practices in both Japan and India over a period of one year, I wrote an ethnography regarding what happens when anime tries to expand into India.

Research on anime's development in China

I am conducting fieldwork on the contemporary dynamics of Japan-China interactions in the field of the anime sector. Core research questions for this project are threefold. (1) How and by whom are anime/animation works made transnational – both from Japan to China and from China to Japan? (2) In what environment does the process of trans-nationalisation take place – institutional (e.g. regulations), technical (e.g. streaming platforms), and market (e.g. consumer behaviour and taste)? (3) How are contemporary Japan-China interactions (especially in view of China’s growing political and economic importance) manifested in the process, and what are its implications for the literature on creative industries? As a part of this research, I am currently working on a joint research project (as a Principal Investigator), which explores how the motif of Hakujaden (The Legend of White Snake), a classic Chinese tale, has been incorporated into a number of visual art works created transnationally around East Asian countries and regions (funded by JSPS KAKENHI Grant).

Research on international co-production projects of anime between Japan and other Asian countries

I am conducting fieldwork on international co-production projects of anime between Japan and other Asian countries. I am particularly focusing on the people called ‘producers’, who are in charge of the business and managerial aspects of the co-production. As the ‘Japanese’ way of making anime is different from the methods used in other Asian countries, a number of conflicts between Japanese and Asian project members take place during the production process. Resolving such ‘cultural differences’ is thus critically important in getting the co-production project done in time. Assuming that producers play key roles in resolving such conflicts, the research project intends to highlight how producers actually intermediate them.

Commentator, Japanese Anime, Made In China (NPR news report)

I appeared as an expert on Japanese animation on Japanese Anime, Made In China, a news report aired on NPR (an American national public radio), to give commentary on globalisation of Japanese animation in the Asian region.

London location scouting coordinator, Phantom in the Twilight (TV anime programme)

I supported the pre-production of Phantom in the Twilight, a TV anime title that was co-produced by a Chinese app & online game company and a Japanese anime studio (simultaneously broadcasted and streamed in both Japan and China in summer 2018). As the title’s main venue was set to be in London, and as I was living in the city at that time, I acted as a local guide for the anime’s production team during their visit to London for location scouting.
